Forest School

We are proud to announce on 20th November 2019, we became the first school in the Greater Manchester area to be awarded FSA (Forest School Association) Forest School Provider status.

Forest Schools refers to a style of teaching that has its roots in Scandinavia, where pre school children spend their days outside in a woodland environment engrossed in hands on, child led learning experiences. The child led aspect of forest schools is perhaps the most crucial element with the outdoor environment facilitating the vast number of learning styles that children benefit from.

We currently provide Forest School for our Reception and Year 1 children, and it is for this that we have been granted Forest School Status.
Our very own Mrs Chaplin and Mrs Green are both Level 3 qualified Forest School practitioners who have a good deal of experience in delivering quality forest schools experiences for children and adults between them. During a series of forest schools sessions, the range of activities can vary widely with the interests of participants but a typical set of sessions could include: Den building, fire pit cooking, tool use, wide games and flora and fauna identification.  This list is by no means exhaustive, the sessions are very much led by the needs and direction of the children themselves.

For our younger children (Tree tots and Nursery), they currently receive Forest School taster sessions as a pre-requisite to the 12 week forest School program that takes place in Reception and year 1.  Our older children from year 2 to year 6, have the opportunity to take part in 6 week Earth Adventure sessions which continues to compliment their outdoor learning Journey at Lime Tree.

Outdoor Learning

At Lime Tree is not simply about delivering a literacy lesson whilst sat outside, or learning multiplication in the rain, it is about giving our children the experiences and skills needed to help them develop into happy and healthy individuals, who are able to have a positive impact on the world around them.

Wherever possible, we aim to take every area of the curriculum outside of the classroom by providing the most engaging, hands on, learning experiences possible. Our outdoor team are passionate and enthusiastic about an outdoors approach, and they work with our teachers and pupils on a daily basis to constantly develop and improve our use of the fantastic setting we boast as our school grounds.

We do not want to give our pupils just a taste of something which they may find exciting and inspiring, only to limit this experience to an end of year reward or a field trip, we want to provide an environment where our pupils can find their passions, explore them and ultimately share them with their friends, their families and the wider community. Whether it be through vegetable growing on an allotment, or livestock keeping on a smallholding, our pupils will have the opportunity to learn where their food comes from, how to grow it and even how to cook it, strengthening their chances of leading healthy and sustainable lives.

Therapeutic Forest and Nature Boost

These unique sessions are offered to children identified by class teachers and the wellbeing team.

The sessions offer some extra support to the child helping them to develop resilience, self-confidence and regulation.  These sessions also support children signposted by staff and parents who may be on our SEND register. These sessions vary in length depending on the needs of the child.  Our shorter Nature Boost sessions are 45 minutes long.  We also deliver a longer session of 1.5 hours which has a Therapeutic Forest element to the work, providing children attending more time in the woodland environment to develop according to their personal needs.
