Design and Technology

The Outcome – To Create Designers

Design and Technology at Lime Tree encourages creative thinking and is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Children will learn how to design purposeful, functional and appealing products. They will then have the opportunity to make them. After they have made the product they will explore and evaluate.

We follow the D&T scheme from Kapow primary which is developed through the Design and Technology association.

Throughout the year we cover 6 areas in D&T and they are-

· Cooking and nutrition

· Mechanical systems

· Textiles

· Electrical systems

· Structures

· Digital world

Pupils will design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. The subject encourages children to become autonomous and creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team.

Through the study of Design and Technology which is project led, we offer an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as how functions and industrial practices are put into practice. This therefore allows the children to reflect on and evaluate present and past design and technology, its uses and its impacts.

The aims of design and technology are:

· To develop imaginative and creating thinking in children and enable them to talk about what they like and dislike when designing and making;

· To enable children to talk about how things work, and to draw and model.

Their ideas;

· To encourage children to select appropriate and relevant tools and techniques when making a product.

· To follow health and safety requirements.
